Music publishers sue Anthropic for $3B over alleged mass copyright infringement
A coalition of major music publishers has filed a $3 billion lawsuit against AI company Anthropic, accusing it of illegally using the lyrics of over 20,000 copyrighted songs to train its models. The suit alleges “flagrant and repeated infringement,” noting that earlier legal filings targeted only around 500 works. Plaintiffs include heavyweights like Universal Music Publishing and Concord. The publishers claim Anthropic’s Claude chatbot generated lyrics nearly identical to the originals without license or attribution.
This case could set a significant precedent for how generative AI companies handle copyrighted content in training data.
