Google partners with TVA to power data centers with next-gen nuclear tech
Google has entered a power purchase agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to use electricity from a cutting-edge nuclear reactor developed by Kairos Power. The Hermes 2 reactor, expected to be operational by 2030 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, will supply low-emissions power to Google’s data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. Unlike traditional water-cooled designs, Kairos’ technology employs molten salt coolant, allowing for lower-pressure operation and reduced construction costs. The plant will provide Google with clean energy attributes, contributing to its decarbonization goals.
This marks a significant shift in how Big Tech addresses power demand for AI and cloud services with advanced nuclear solutions.
