Norway blames Russian hackers for cyberattack on hydroelectric dam
Norway’s intelligence chief has accused Russian state-sponsored hackers of orchestrating a cyberattack that temporarily hijacked a hydroelectric dam’s systems. The attackers exploited the dam’s controls to open a floodgate, releasing millions of gallons of water, though no injuries or lasting damage were reported. The incident marks one of the most serious known cyber intrusions on critical infrastructure in Europe.
It underscores the rising threat of state-backed cyber warfare targeting essential infrastructure and the need for stronger cyber defenses in the energy sector.
