Zoox receives green light from U.S. regulators for custom-built autonomous vehicles
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted Amazon-owned Zoox an exemption to deploy its self-driving vehicles without traditional controls like a steering wheel or pedals. This marks a key regulatory milestone for Zoox’s robotaxi, designed from the ground up for autonomy. The exemption allows the company to begin real-world testing and data collection for its fully autonomous service. In parallel, the NHTSA has closed a previous investigation into the company.
This approval signals federal support for purpose-built autonomous vehicles and opens the path for broader commercialization.
