Google denies UK demand for encryption backdoor, remains silent on secret surveillance orders
Google stated it has not received a demand from the UK government to build a backdoor into its encrypted services. However, during recent questioning by U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, the company declined to confirm or deny if it had received a secret order under the UK’s Investigatory Powers Act — similar to one reportedly served to Apple earlier this year. Such “technical capability notices” could compel tech firms to silently weaken encryption.
The ambiguity raises ongoing concerns about government surveillance and transparency in encrypted communications.
